Vic Turner died on June 19, 2008

Family, friends, and members of the Crescent City Coin Club mourn the loss of Vic Turner.

Vic was a Past President of the Crescent City Coin Club, served on the Board of Governors, and a club member since June 1994.

He was a loving husband to Mary and distributed gifts at the Christmas Banquet.

Vic Turner and Rick Demers operated The Coins & Collectibles Shop in Kenner, Louisiana.

My prayers are with Mary Turner and her sons for the passing of her husband and their father, Vic Turner.  My earliest memory of Vic was at the Coinival Show in 1996 when I met him at the first coin show I ever attended.  At that time, he was the Club President and I found him to be a consummate ambassador for the club and hobby.  He renewed my interest in the hobby and inspired me to join the club.  Vic was amazingly well organized and always had good ideas.  He will be missed by the many people who knew him.

$5 Redesigned

Unveiled on September 20, 2007 by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the redesigned $5 bill has more color and new security features.

Originally, the five wasn't going to be redesigned. But that decision was reversed once counterfeiters began bleaching $5 notes and printing fake $100 bills with the bleached paper to take advantage of the fact that some of the security features were in the same locations on both notes.

Return to Monticello

2006 "Return to Monticello" Nickel (click link to read full article published by the U.S. Mint)

“The changing images in the Westward Journey Nickel Series™ lead us back to Thomas Jefferson, who envisioned the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark expedition as a way to move the Nation forward,” said United States Mint Acting Director David A. Lebryk. “The image of a forward-looking Jefferson is a fitting tribute to that vision.”

Board Meeting

Board Members are scheduled to meet on Thursday, November 30, 2005 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting will be at the VFW Hall where we have our membership meeting and shows, not at the home of Bob & Linda Eddy.

Membership meeting of the Crescent City Coin Club will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
Members and friends of the Crescent City Coin Club are invited to attend our first meeting since hurricane Katrina this coming Thursday beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall at 3314 Richland Avenue in Metairie, Louisiana.

There will not be a dinner before the meeting.

Dale Toncrey is contacting members by telephone to get as many to the meeting as possible.  There will be much to discuss and the door prize, membership drawing, coin raffle, and 50/50 are all on the agenda!

Discussion topics will include:

1) Fall Coin Show

The Fall Coin Show scheduled for November 12-13, 2005 was cancelled.  Bob Eddy, President and Show Chairman, contacted the dealers and sent refunds to all who have made deposits.

2) General Club Meetings

Both the September and October meeting were cancelled.

3) Christmas Dinner

The restaurant that was scheduled for the dinner (La Cuisine) was severely flooded. Our reservation has been transferred to Johnny Trauth's Seafood Bistro in Kenner for the Christmas Dinner.  More information on menu and cost will be provided at the meeting.

4) Elections

This issue is still unresolved. Two proposals are on the table and will be presented to the membership at the meeting:

4a) Postpone elections until after January 2006.
4b) Carry-over the existing Officers and Board of Governors through 2006 and hold normal elections in November 2006.

Fall Show was scheduled for November 12-13, 2005

Cancelled due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

The show in the Fall is known as the Fall Show (gee, what a creative naming convention!).

A free Educational Seminar entitled 100 Years of Pocket Change will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. each day (same seminar, just two different chances to attend) .  Everyone is welcome and there will be fun, prizes, and learning for everyone who participates!

November Show and October Club Meeting cancelled due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
The November coin show, dubbed the Fall Show, is cancelled.  Moreover, there will not be an October club meeting of the Crescent City Coin Club.

An emergency Board Meeting was held on 10/7/2005 via teleconference.  The discussions during that meeting are summarized below:

1) Fall Coin Show

General consensus was to cancel the November coin show. Bob Eddy, President and Show Chairman, will contact the dealers and let them know. He will also send refunds to all who have made deposits. Linda Eddy, Corresponding Secretary, will get a general notice out to all on the mailing list (not sure how good the mailing list is at this time, since many people are spread-out around the country).

2) General Club Meetings

It was decided not to have a meeting in October; consensus was there is probably not enough members in town or have more pressing matters this month. There was some damage to VFW Hall which will have to be repaired before we can have a meeting. Every effort will be made to hold a meeting in November.

3) Christmas Dinner

The restaurant that was scheduled for the dinner (La Cuisine) was severely flooded. Our reservation has been transferred to Johnny Trauth's Seafood Bistro in Kenner for the Christmas Dinner. More info on menu and cost to come.

4) Elections

This issue is still unresolved. Two proposals are on the table and will be presented to the membership at the November meeting:

4a) Postpone elections until after January 2006.

4b) Carry-over the existing Officers and Board of Governors through 2006 and hold normal elections in November 2006.

Other information provided by Rick Demers and Dale Toncrey:

Rick and Joan Demers are fine and very fortunate.  Their house had no water inside, a little wind damage to rain gutters and over hang of roof.  They did suffer water in their Ford Bronco and travel trailer has water damage, both were in the
driveway next to the house.  Joan and Rick rode the storm out in Vicksburg, Mississippi and stayed there in a motel for 2 weeks.  They then went to family in Tampa, Florida for a week before returning back home.

Bob and Linda Eddy are fine but they did get water in their house.  Bob has lost a lot of his reference library to water damage.

Vic and Mary Turner spent most of their "evacuation" with their son in Jacksonville, Florida.  They are home now.  They had no damage other then a stinky refrigerator. The shop was unharmed and was open for business 2 weeks after the storm.

Robert and Judy Rongey they are fine, but his shop has some water damage.

Bob and Debbie Reed are OK, but they had water damage to their home and their shop had a portion of the roof cave in.

Dale and Curtis Toncrey had extensive water damage, but they are OK.

Ruth Young is OK, but their is damage to the VFW Hall.

Steve Barnes is OK.

Roger, Elizabeth, and Emily Green are safe, but their home suffered extensive flooding.

Eric and Janet Leonard are safe and living in Houston.  Brandon is with them and Erin is in Boston attending Northeastern University.  She was visiting when they had to evacuate for Katrina and flew from Houston to Boston in time for the start of the Fall semester.

I'll do my best to keep you informed,

2005 Nickel Redesign

New nickel obverse
Bison nickel reverse
Ocean view nickel reverse

The new design on the front of the 2005 nickels features a new image of Thomas Jefferson. The word "Liberty" appears in a style that is like Jefferson’s own handwriting.

The first new 2005 design on the nickel’s reverse (back) features the American bison, also called a buffalo. This animal used to roam the plains in such great numbers that the animal was noted often by Lewis and Clark in their journals. This buffalo also reminds us of the American Indians who counted on the animal for food, clothing, and shelter, and of all the wildlife that the explorers wrote about and brought back to the United States as a record for science.

The second reverse design shows a view of the Pacific Ocean, the goal that the Lewis and Clark Expedition reached after more than a year of hard travel. The scene surrounds a quote written by Captain Clark: "Ocean in view! O! The joy!"

Jefferson had a medal made as a token of peace, which we call his "Peace Medal." The explorers were to give the medals as gifts to the Native American chiefs they met as a sign of peace.

The design that was used on Jefferson's Peace Medal is used on the first of the new nickels, the Peace Medal Nickel. It shows the hand of a Native American and the hand of a European-American clasped in a friendly handshake below a crossed pipe and tomahawk. The words "Louisiana Purchase" are inscribed above the date of the purchase, 1803.

The second nickel of 2004 shows the keelboat that was part of the transportation for Lewis and Clark's expedition. In this Keelboat Nickel design, captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are standing on deck at the start of their famous trip.

$50 Note Redesign

On September 14, 2004, the United States government began circulating the redesigned $50 note.

The most noticeable difference in the new design is the subtle introduction of background color including a full color flag, which makes it more burdensome for potential counterfeiters because it adds complexity to the note.

The issuance of the new $50 note will be followed by a new $100 note in 2005. Decisions on new designs for the $5 and $10 notes are still under consideration, but a redesign of the $2 and $1 notes is not planned.

$20 Note Redesign
On October 9, 2003, the United States government began circulating the redesigned $20 note.
